The method has the following steps: determination of a light density characteristic curve for a test image within application of lookup table correction values; setting of a selected characteristic curve; measurement of changes in lighting strength due to changes in ambient light during normal operation and; calculation of correction values and storage in a lookup table for a particular background lighting strength. An independent claim is made for an arrangement for optimizing the curve of a light density characteristic curve.
