A casing compartment (CC) is excited on a stator side by inner (3) and outer (4) exciting coils overlaid concentrically. For low-loss operation, passive magnetic bearings are used with superconductive exciting coils and ferromagnetic cores. An assembly of magnetic bearings is achieved by corresponding CC core elements in a magnetically attractive structure. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a casing compartment radial bearing; and (b) a casing compartment axial bearing.
