Method for determining the distance between a vehicle and an object within its surroundings has the following steps: generation of an image of the object, which contains an appropriate area (300) of the object, using a 2D monocular camera that is built into the vehicle; determination of the intensity over the object area and; determination of the distance to the object based on the determined intensity distribution. An independent claim is made for a distance measurement device with a monocular camera and an analysis arrangement.
