Method for controlling he switching of a packet-based data bus network, especially in a motor vehicle, between active and inactive operating, i.e. normal, states. According to the method a master control unit determines whether the network can be switched to inactive mode. If it determines that this is the case, it sends a message to the other control units that it is going to switch operating modes. If it does not receive a contradicting message from any of the other control units it changes the network operating state.
