The safety device for the automatic shut-off of gas pipes has a shut-off element (7) upon which acts a release mechanism which includes a thermal bi-metal snap plate (8) which when a predetermined temperature value is exceeded changes its form in spring fashion. The shut-off element is constructed in ball form and consists of heat resistant elastomer material. The snap plate has a curved shape and the shut-off element is fastened to the middle of the snap plate.
