A method for deep drawing metal caps for fitting onto gas bottles, e.g. for the food industry, has the caps stamped out of lacquered metal sheet in one press action followed by a second press action with the cutting stamp (2) moving relative to the draw preform (6) to complete the shaping of the lipped edge of the skirt of the cap. The cap is held without stress during the second drawing process, with no damage to the lacquer coating and with no lacquer residues left in the drawing tools.
