A heat exchanger (1) has horizontal flat parallelly spaced panels (3) through which a heat transfer fluid flows. Vertical convection channels (17, 18) are situated at the ends of the panels. Concentric forward and back- flow supplies (V, R) for the heat transfer fluid are situated at the bottom of the heat exchanger and a air supply (20) is situated in the upper area of the exchanger. An emptying connection (21) is located in the lower part of the exchanger. The uppermost panel is fluidly connected to at least one of the vertical channels (17, 18). At least the panels located between the uppermost and second lowest panel are connected at both ends to the vertical channels (17, 18). In addition to the vertical channels (17, 18), a further fluid pipe (10) is connected at least indirectly at one end with the forward flow heat transfer fluid supply (V) and at the other end with the uppermost panel. A regulating valve (13) is integrated at one corner area of the heat exchanger.
