Producing decorative paper with a pigment coating comprises contactless application of an aqueous color coating composition with a solids content of 30-70 wt.% onto an optionally pigment-filled coating base paper with a weight of 28-65 g/m2 by curtain coating followed by drying. An independent claim is also included for apparatus for producing decorative paper with a pigment coating, comprising a curtain coated for applying the pigment coating onto a largely dried base paper web moving through a papermaking or refining machine.
