The sensor element (10) comprises electrochemical measuring cells to which an electrode pair is assigned, and electrodes (31, 32) for eliminating hydrogen, hydrocarbons and/or carbon monoxide. A high voltage is applied to the electrodes. An independent claim is also included for a process for detecting gases in gas mixtures, especially oxygen or nitrogen oxides, in IC engine exhaust gases using the above sensor element.
