The system (8, 8') includes at least one guide device (20, 20') comprising a flexible connecting member extending around two or more guide rolls (29, 29', 30, 30', 31, 31') and with a first end secured to the compartment bin (3, 3') and a second end secured via a retarding mechanism (25, 25', 26, 26', 28, 28') and a spring device to a holder (23, 23, 27, 27') fixed to the aircraft structure. The flexible member comprises a roller chain (18, 18'), cable or belt. The spring device comprises a tensile spring (17, 17') secured to the holder and to the second end of the flexible member, or it can comprise a spiral spring forming part of a spring-loaded cable roll. The braking mechanism comprises a chain wheel (28, 28') in contact with the flexible member and a flywheel (25, 25') intermeshing with a braking device (26, 26'). The system is used to drop the bin into a lowered (open) position and comprises a pair of levers (9, 9', 10, 10') with one end secured to the rear side (6, 6') of the bin and the other end rotatably secured to the aircraft structure.
