A supply of loose fibres is transported by air through a passage incorporating a sensor to detect the presence of foreign bodies and an arrangement to expel foreign bodies at a corresponding point. The passage incorporates a fibre deflection baffle plate. The arrangement to selectively expel foreign bodies is an air jet. The fibres impact the baffle plate at an angle of from 70 to 160 relative to the flight direction. The fibres are deflected into a suction passage 30 to 140 mm wide of adjustable width.
