Composition for pickling metal surfaces by treatment comprises acid aqueous composition containing mixture of water and acid(s), alkyne alkoxyate(s), comprising alkoxylated prop-1-yn-3-ol alkoxylate or but-2-yn-1,4-diol dialkoxylate with (poly)oxyethylene- or (poly)oxypropylene groups; and other additives and/or ancillaries. Composition for pickling metal surfaces by treatment comprises acid aqueous composition containing (wt.%): (a) 60-99.99 wt.% mixture of water and acid(s); (b) 0.01-2 % alkyne alkoxyate(s) of formulae HCtriple boundCCH2O(CH2C(R)HO)nH (IA) and/or H(OC(R)HCH2)nOCH2Ctriple boundCCH2O(CH2C(R)HO)n'H (IB); and (c) 0-38 % other additives and/or ancillaries: R : H or methyl; n, n' : 1-10. An independent claim is also included for an acid, aqueous composition for pickling metal surfaces.
