The luggage carrier (2) extends along the length of the rear fender (3) of the automobile (1), transverse to the automobile longitudinal axis and is pivoted between a stowed position fitting within the rear fender and a luggage carrying position, in which it projects horizontally from the rear of the automobile. The rear fender provides a storage compartment for the luggage carrier, its outer wall provided by a pivoted cover (11) which is dropped down for bringing the carrier into the luggage carrying position.
