The control unit restricts at least one predetermined comfort function in dependence on a given defined critical condition. The conditions are rated with regard to the risk of potential danger and the degree of restriction depends on this rating. The critical conditions, for example, are: shortening of recommended minimal distance between vehicles, breaking speed limit, high traffic density or high collision probability, lowering of alertness, obstacle recognition, visibility obstruction, detection of oncoming curve in the road, slippery road, unintentional change of lane, failure of vehicle.
