The candle (1) has a wick (2) of the usual pattern which may be set alight to provide a flame (3) fed by melted and vaporized wax. The flame may be extinguished by a figure-of-eight- section rod (4) made of wax. The rod has two rounded tips side- by-side, which are brought into contact with the wick to quench the flame. the cold tip of the rod may absorb liquid wax from the wick, cooling it and reducing the rate of evaporation and extinguishing the flame.
