The portable dam or flood barrier has arch-shaped members (1) fitting together and overlapping at their ends. The arches may be parabolic or ogival or any other suitable shape and may be filled with thin-walled tubes which are filled with water to act as ballast. This increases the stability of the arch and enhances its resistance to side pressure. The ends of each arch form reinforced (4) feet (3) which may be prevented from spreading by a flat floor member (2) with upcurled edges. The floor rests on the ground, is loaded by the ballast and act as a brake to resist sideways skidding.
