A device rotates a Brewster element. A power-measuring device records laser power transmitted or reflected by the Brewster element. A control unit deduces the laser beam's polarization from laser power recorded by the power-measuring device and from the Brewster element's swing angle. Brewster plates rotate on an axis parallel to the laser beam's direction of spread. An independent claim is also included for determining the polarization of a laser beam.
