A method for self cleaning of an electric baking oven has a baking tray (11) fitted onto the lowest supports (10) to form a lower space (2') for enhanced heating to at least 450 deg. C. in order to remove food layers from the bottom of the oven, i.e. by pyrolytic cleaning. The other parts of the oven are at a lower temperature during the cleaning process and no special security/safety precautions need be used, e.g. such as locking access door.
