A pulse-width-modulated signal (PWMS) (b) assumes a first value in an initial period and a second value during the remainder of the period. A phase position in the pulse within the period of the PWMS varies from period to period so that energy in the PWMS is distributed over a wide frequency spectrum, preferably by means of delta -modulators (9) coupled in parallel and a vector controller (5). Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) A device for transforming a quantized signal into a pulse-width modulated signal; (B) and for a device for transforming an input signal into a pulse-width modulated signal with a quantizer (23).
