System for authenticating unit firmware, especially for automation units has means: for distribution of firmware; means for formation of a specific compression element, especially a single-use hash value, means for insertion of the encrypted compression element as a signature in the firmware and means for reading, decrypting and comparison of the encrypted compression element. Independent claims are also included for the following:- (A) a method for authenticating firmware; (B) a unit for authenticating firmware and; (C) an interrogation module for authenticating firmware.
