Treatment of flowable media, especially water treatment, uses upward flow through an inclined filter which can be switched to a downward backwash rinsing mode

A process for treatment of a flowable medium, especially water, to remove particulate impurities by flowing it through a filter with an inlet and outlet in different horizontal planes and with cyclic or acyclic interruption for rinsing by a backwash, the medium being flown upwards and the rinse backwash flowing downwards in a regulated amount to give a separate outflow. An independent claim is also included for the apparatus such that the medium to be treated is introduced via a pump (2) or a pressure network comprising a control unit (1), pipes (3, 4 and 5), valves (8, 9) and one or more unit (1)-controlled filter reactors (6) with an inlet and outlet (10 and 11) in different horizontal planes and a filter material (7), the arrangement being such that (a) filter reactor (6) is at an inclined angle and the filter material (7) is granular and of lower density than the medium to be treated; and (b) during operation a layer which acts a filter is formed in the upper part of reactor (6) and the reactor (6) is rinsed by a downwards-flowing backwash controlled cyclically or acyclically by switching valve (8) such that the filter granulate is swirled and the adhering impurities are dissolved in the medium which is drawn off.
