The lever-like cam follower (1) for acting upon a gas exchange valve (2) consists of two side walls connected by a cross beam (3) which on its underside (5) on its valve side end has a contact face (7) for the gas exchange valve. The region of the contact face away from the valve is stepped in relation to the rest of the cross beam underside, whereby the cross beam outside of the contact face has a constant thickness which is greater than in the stepped region.
