Method for determining changes in the surface tension of a transparent liquid and for determining the liquid level. According to the method the liquid meniscus is illuminated with a light beam, whose beam path is modified by its passage through the liquid meniscus. Dependent on the liquid level the light beam will also undergo total reflection or not. On the opposite side of the liquid container to the light source is a photoelectric receiver for detecting the incident light beam. The invention also relates to a corresponding arrangement for implementation of the inventive method with a semiconductor laser source.
