New amphoteric polymers including aza-cyclic system quaternized by anionic groups, useful as polyfunctional additives, e.g. bleach promoters and color transfer inhibitors, in detergents or cleansers

New amphoteric polymers (I), derived from vinyl monomers, contain at least one nitrogen-containing mono-, bi- or tricyclic ring system, with at least some of the N-atoms quaternized by carboxyalkyl, sulfoalkyl or phosphonoalkyl groups. New amphoteric polymers (I) contain at least one structural unit of formula -(CH2-CH(X1-Y1)-CH2-CH(X2-Y2))m- (a) or -(CH2-CH(X1-Y1)-CH2-CH(X2-Y2)-CH2-CH(X3-Y3))n- (b). m = 2-20000; n = 2-14000; X1 - X3 = direct bond, CH2, 2-6C alkylene, 2-6C alkenylene (with at least one double bond), OC(O), O, C(O)O, C(O)S, C(O)N(R3) or NHC(O); R3 = 2-6C alkyl or 2-6C alkenyl (with at least one double bond); Y1 - Y3 = mono-, bi- or tricyclic ring system consisting of C-atoms and one or more N-atoms, provided that (i) at least 5% of the Y1 units, at least 5% of the Y2 units and/or at least 5% of the Y3 units contain a quaternized ring N atom substituted by R1 and/or R2 and (ii) one quaternized ring N (in each of these groups of Y1, Y2 and/or Y3 units) contains each of R1 and R2; R1 = (CH2)aCOOH, (CH2)bSO3H or (CH2)cP(O)(OH)2 (all optionally in salt form); a, b, c = 1-6; R2 = as for R1; 1-16C alkyl or 2-16C alkenyl (with at least one double bond), both optionally substituted by OH, Ph, alkylphenyl, halo, SH or NH2; or aromatic ring (optionally substituted by one or more of COOH, SO3H, P(O)(OH)2 or their salts); provided that if one of R1 or R2 = -(CH2)aCOOH (or its salt) and Y1, Y2 or Y3 = unsubstituted pyridyl, then the other of R1 and R2 = (CH2)bSO3H or (CH2)cP(O)(OH)2 (or their salts). An independent claim is included for detergent and/or cleaning compositions containing (I).
