The unit has a measuring body (26) with a transceiver (30) at one of its end that is penetrating into a sample (12). The transceiver has a gauging surface (34) at its extreme end and a longitudinal section (36) joining the surface. Angle between the surface and the section is made as pointed as possible, so that the surface operates as a working surface to the sample, when the unit penetrates into the sample. The gauging surface extends across the longitudinal direction of the measuring body. The length of the longitudinal section depends upon the peripheral area of the gauging surface. An independent claim is also included for a penetration measuring device with a penetration unit.
