The invention relates to an electrode column (1), which consists of carbon or graphite sections (2). In contrast to conventional electrode columns, which are subjected to tensile stresses, the said electrode column (1) is subjected to pressure loads. This is achieved by means of a tie rod (11), which is placed within a coaxial longitudinal channel of the electrode column sections. The channel has an internal thread (4). The tie rod (11) employs a tensile force, clamping the electrode sections (2) together, and consists of a temperature resistant fiber-reinforced composite on the end facing the furnace. This design separates the function power supply, provided by the graphite or carbon sections (2) and mechanical support provided by the fiber- reinforced composite tie rod (11).
