A high DC voltage is connected across the cathode and anode in the measurement chamber. Discharge at the cathode produces ions migrate in the electrical field set up, towards the anode. The current arising, is measured using a suitable method. Variations in this current caused by smoke and gases from fires, is used for fire detection.
