The engine (10) is connected to an exhaust gas purification device having a precatalyst (14) and a main catalyst (18) disposed in the downstream of the precatalyst. The precatalyst is not made up of precious metal and has a support covered with a washcoat. The principal catalyst is connected to the precatalyst by an exhaust gas tube (16). The precatalyst is disposed directly in the downstream of an exhaust gas collector (12). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an internal combustion engine.
