The unit has a notch (3), which is formed on one side around a recess (2) that is to be made on the sheet metal unit. A tensioning device is connected with a sheet metal piece (4) to remove the metal piece from a front wall (1) that is supported by a pressure pad. A huge drawing force is exerted on the metal piece through the tensioning device so that the metal piece gets teared from the wall along the notch to form the recess. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing body types with a sheet metal construction unit.
