Two brake saddles (1,2) may be welded to each end of a hollow shaft (3). The ends of the shaft extending beyond the pairs of brake saddles are tapered down to a reduced diameter. The saddles are welded to steps of slightly reduced diameter near the small diameter ends of the shaft. Each saddle has a curved bearing area fitting onto the outside diameter of the shaft and has a crest or ridge with three bores.
