To mount a component (10) at a vehicle bodywork (12), e.g. an instrument panel unit (26), the component is arranged at a mounted functional unit outside the fitting point (14), to be secured in position. In each position of the functional unit, the mounting points (15) are detected at the fitting position before installation, and at least one mounting point (18) has an accurate alignment at the bodywork.
