The induction system for an internal combustion engine has an air inlet (2) leading into a plenum chamber (1) into which have a fixed annular suction pipe (3) can project. There is a separate pipe for each cylinder of the engine. An actuator (8) has a piston rod passing through a hole in the wall of the chamber and holds a hollow piston (6) which can surround the suction pipes. Air flows into the annular space (7) between the piston and the suction pipe. A sensor (9) is placed inside the piston opposite the inlet (4) of the suction pipe. The outlet (5) may be connected to the cylinder block of the engine.
