The water-cooled internal combustion engine cylinder head (1) has hollow shafts (6) at intervals to accommodate the spark plug for each cylinder. There may be shafts to accommodate the valve stems and induction and exhaust gas passages. The cooling water flows through a large space (3) between the spark plug shafts and there are projections (5,5a) on the roof of the cylinder head which form flow deflectors (4) which are lens-shaped in horizontal cross-section.
