Device (1) for detecting water vapor in oil contained within a housing (2), especially a gearbox housing, that has a venting arrangement (3). The device has switch contacts (4) that are joined to a measurement arrangement (5), which detects a change in measurement values that are proportional to the content of water vapour within the oil. An independent claim is made for a method for detecting water vapor in oil.
