The metal casing is a cast iron jacket (1). Compositions for the refractory are provided, for (a) repeated or (b) single-shot use. These are quantified in terms of (a) spinel, alumina and magnesite and (b) bauxite and magnetite. The casing is either black, hard (i.e. chilled-) cast iron or white tempered (i.e. malleable-) cast iron.
