A method for determining the dioxan content of surfactants with polyethylene glycol chains (I) involves treating (I) with a stripper gas and analysing the resulting gas phase by absorbance measurements using an IR spectrometer. A method for determination of the dioxan content of surfactants with polyethylene glycol chains (I) involves (a) treating (I) with a stripper gas to give a gas phase containing dioxan, water and any volatile impurities, (b) passing the unseparated mixture into a gas cell connected to an IR spectrometer and (c) determining dioxan from measurements of absorbance.
