The piston (4), gudgeon pin (6), connecting rod (7), crank (5a) and crankshaft (5), with balance weights (5b), work in the usual way. The modification consists of an out-of-balance weight (7a) on the little end, extending at right-angles to the longitudinal axis of the connecting rod. If the engine rotates clockwise, the out-of-balance weight extends to the right. At top dead center, the piston and little end of the connecting rod are subjected to a downward acceleration of 1000 to 2000 g. The inertia of the out-of-balance weight provides an upward force (F 1) which applies a turning moment (M 1) providing a forward turning force (F 2) to the crank.
