The soft cosmetic pencil (12) sharpener (10) has a protective cap (48) which fits over the end of the pencil. It may collect the shavings cut by the angled knife blade (22). The cap has recesses (52) at its end (50), which fit onto releasable holding fingers (54). The cap butts against a sleeve (18,36) closely surrounding the pencil. The knife blade is set at the correct angle to cut the end of the pencil into a conical shape and an additional blade is fitted to cut the tip into a rounded shape. The pencil may have a soft core (14) inside a thick-walled casing (16).
