An ultrasonic horn(40) acts in conjunction with an anvil(30) having welding faces(32) and a cutting edge(34). The welding face, which rises from the anvil base surface(12), is separated from the cutting edge whose entire blade height protrudes from the anvil base surface. The cutting edge(34) extends the full length of the anvil(30). A shaped cutting edge(36), e.g. for cutting a hanging eye(24) for the package, is located between the cutting edge and the welding surface(32). A profiled welding surface(38) between the cutting edge and welding face produces a decorative and/or stiffening effect on the workpiece. The profiled welding face and shaped cutting edge are adjacent to each other. Anvil construction comprises a support(44) for a tool part(46) carrying the welding face and cutting edge. The tool part is a plate which may be adhesively bonded to the support.
