The hydraulic clearance compensating element (1) for the valve gear of an internal combustion engine has a guide sleeve (5) acting axially by an end face (4) on an enclosure construction, and an idle stroke device (2) which consists of at least one single-layer disc-form spiral spring such as a cup spring (2a), internal star spring or sinuous spring which is installed axially between the end face of the guide sleeve and the enclosure construction, and which is enveloped by hydraulic medium.
