The leak detection system is for a breathing apparatus (1) used by a hospital patient (13) has a fan (3) blowing air through a valve (4) into a first chamber in a ventilating unit (7). The chamber contains a volume flow sensor (9) and a pressure sensor (8). The volume flow sensor and a pressure sensor are connected to a computer (14) calculating the respiratory parameter resistance and compliance and the amount of leakage for two or more successive breathing cycles. The computer is connected to an actuator (6) for the control valve. The air leaving the ventilating unit passes through a flexible hose (10) to an expiration valve (11) and a breathing mask (12).
