X-ray mammography unit has an arm (1) with an X-ray tube (2), an object table (3) and a compression plate (4). The latter comprises a frame (5) and a disk (6) mounted on the arm. The disk is made of flexible material and has a mechanism (15, 16, 17) that joins the end (8) of the disk, nearest to the arm, to the arm, so that the disk can be moved along the longitudinal axis of the frame in a direction normal to the table surface.
