A suction dredging system, e.g. for clearing inland waterways, yacht basins has a floating pump (7) with the pump held under the water level and with rapid release pipe couplings (18) to connect to a suction hose (5) and to a pressure duct (8) which pumps the water and sludge mixture to a sludge handling system (9). A suction head (3) is fitted to the bottom of the suction house by another rapid coupling (18). The system can also be used to skim water surfaces free of floating impurities, e.g. oil slicks.
