The device has a casing (12) and a drawer (14) which can be extended and/or retracted. The drawer receives a data carrier (11), and has a scanning head (20) for reading data from the carrier. The device is arranged in such a manner that in a suspended position of the drawer, the scanning head is located in a protected position. A protective cover is provided, under which the scanning head is positioned when the drawer is suspended. An independent claim is also included for a loading and unloading procedure of a data carrier.
