A localizer with three to fifteen, ideally between five and seven transversal layers of images of the area in question is created and examined for being used as a reference. A tru-fi sequence is used in the process showing the vessels as bright areas in contrast to the surroundings. In a next step the image is divided into separate areas and the segments containing the carotid arteries are extracted. An in-plane layer is connected to a through-plane layer.
