A method for fitting shear fasteners, especially for joining metal sheets (1, 2) has the shear fastener (4) positioned through the coaxial holes (3), fitted with a retaining sleeve (11) and gripped by the setting tool (12). The increasing force applied by the setting tool is monitored by an integral sensor (16) which measures the force between the grip jaws (15) and the outer part (14) of the tool, which presses onto the retaining. The control system compares the setting force with a programmed map and determines the shear point, i.e. when the top of the shear fastener is pulled off and the retaining sleeve is deformed to grip the fastener.
