The appliance is for treating fresh or green timber (10), esp. timber having surface moisture of at least 60%, to reduce moisture content to less than 20%. It has an esp. corrosion-resistant, esp. thermo-stable and/or esp. pressure-proof container (30) for the timber and the impregnating compound (20). This is heated by one or more heaters (40), positioned esp. in the container base (34), and there is esp. a circulation pump (50) for continuous movement of the compound. The appliance also has an esp. heated support to let the treated timber drip, and/or a holder to move the timber into and out of the container, and/or to collect the dripping compound. Timber having a surface moisture content of at least 60%, is dipped into the compound, e.g. paraffin and/or wax, the water contained in the timber is expelled in the shape of steam by pressure and/or temperature treatment and is replaced by the compound. The moisture content is thereby reduced to a max. of 20%. The compound contains fire retardant, and/or die, and/or fungicide, and/or insecticide.
