The apparatus has a vent opening (44) to direct flow on an inflation fluid and a tether that moves a vent unit from an open to closed conditions based on the deployment of an airbag (12). Latching mechanism (48) has a latched condition to hold the vent unit in closed condition and an unlatched condition to move the vent unit from the closed position. Control unit actuates the latching unit based on sensed occupant condition.
