The device has a measuring device (26), a microcontroller (28), a bus and an A/D converter (38) to acquire operating parameter of a battery in an active mode. A comparator (42) compares battery voltage with a preset cut-off voltage to effect the transition of the measuring device, controller, bus and converter from the inactive mode to the active mode to acquire the parameter when the battery voltage falls below the preset voltage. An independent claim is also included for a method of determining operating parameters of a starter battery in a motor vehicle.
