Automobile engine control system comprises a diesel engine, a diesel fuel tank for supplying the engine with fuel, a gasoline tank, a reformer for producing partial oxidation products from gasoline from the gasoline tank, and a nitrogen oxide trap connected to the engine's exhaust. Independent claims are also included for: (1) controlling a diesel engine by providing a diesel fuel tank, a gasoline tank, a gasoline reformer and a nitrogen oxide (NOx) trap, producing partial oxidation products using the gasoline reformer, and regenerating the NOx trap with the partial oxidation products; (2) controlling a diesel engine by supplying a partial oxidation reformer with gasoline and introducing the reformate into the diesel engine.
